Shorthand: A Creative Story
By James McNamaraFebruary 09, 2026
For the Love of Your Desk
Step inside Shorthand and you’re instantly swept into a world where the humble pen is celebrated, paper comes alive, and everyday desk tools become treasures. This boutique stationery shop isn’t just a store—it’s a playground for paper lovers, a haven for the creatively curious, and a home for anyone who delights in the art of correspondence.
Wander the aisles and you’ll find an irresistible mix of elegant greeting cards, whimsical notebooks, and desk accessories that spark joy. Try out a fountain pen, run your fingers over the thick, textured paper, and laugh with the team as you pick out the perfect card. Every detail, from the curated displays to the helpful staff, is designed to make you fall in love with your workspace all over again.
The Heart Behind the Shop: Rosanna Kvernmo
Shorthand’s story is really Rosanna’s—a tale of creativity, resilience, and community. Raised in Seattle and schooled in English literature, Rosanna fell for letterpress at 23 and never looked back. She started small: printing cards on a century-old press, making invitations for friends, and dreaming up new designs late into the night. With her husband Joel, an artist and photographer, by her side, she built a business from ink, paper, and a whole lot of heart.
Life threw its curveballs. Rosanna lost Joel to cancer in 2019, but she carried their shared vision forward—growing Shorthand into a beloved local fixture. Her shop is more than a retail space; it’s a tribute to partnership, perseverance, and the joy of making something beautiful by hand. Today, Rosanna lives near Larchmont, walks to work, and pours her love for craft and community into every aspect of the store.
What Makes Shorthand Special
Shorthand is for everyone: seasoned stationery aficionados, curious kids, and anyone who believes a great pen can brighten a Monday. The shop’s motto—”for the love of your desk”—is more than a slogan. It’s an invitation to rediscover the pleasure of writing, creating, and connecting. Whether you’re hunting for the perfect gift, starting a new journal, or just want to treat yourself to a desk upgrade, Shorthand welcomes you with open arms (and plenty of paper).
